The 4th ELyT Lab workshop was held in France from March 12 to 14, 2012, in Presqu'ile de Giens (south east). 80 participants (35 coming from Sendai) attended the meeting, including 26 presentations and 11 posters
This ELyT School will be organized by TU for French students. It is planned to have about 15 to 25 students from Lyon in Sendai. The budget will be mainly provided by TU for this action.
This conference is the next of a series on the same topics organized by IFS of TU, Sendai. Usually many persons from ELyT lab are participating.
The objective of this first workshop on this subject is to have a kind of brain storming in order to study solutions to mitigate tsunami.
The next annual workshop is already scheduled. The participants will have to be in Sendai the 23rd evening for a common bus departure on the Feb. 24.
The second ELyT School, organized by Naoto Wada (Tohoku University) and his team at Sendai (Oct. 24 – Nov. 3, 2010), has been a success. Its organization was made possible with the help of the University of Lyon (with a financial support of about 13 000 € for travelling expenses and accommodation fees), INSA Lyon (with more than 23 000 €) and Tohoku University (7 000 € for local organization and cultural events)¹ .

One of the key points for developing a long-term partnership between France and Japan is to encourage students to spend long periods in the partner country (18 months for Master double degree and 1.5 / 3 years for PhD thesis). Usually, upon arrival, the students have limited previous knowledge about the host country. For this reason, it was decided to enlarge our Lyon-Tohoku collaboration, through the organization of scientific schools dedicated to undergraduate and graduate students. The project aims to give the opportunity to young Japanese and French students to get to know the scientific activities of the ELyT lab, but also to have a first contact with the partner country.
A first attempt was realized with the Summer school in September 2009 where 20 students from Japan came to Lyon for 2 weeks. It was a great success among the young Japanese students of Tohoku University, and it was then decided to organize a second one, this time in Sendai: the ELyT autumn school in October 2010.
This 10-days program was devoted to both scientific and cultural aspects of Japan, with the participation also of laboratories and industrial partners. After launching a call in May 2010, 20 students were selected and participated in this school. They were PhD or Master students from INSA-Lyon, Ecole Centrale de Lyon, Ecole Normale Supérieure and Université Lyon1. For most of them, it was their first experience in Japan.
Some conferences were given by eminent professors of Tohoku University (Sociology of Japan, Recent advances in Brain sciences, Flow dynamics, etc.). These high level lectures were really appreciated by the students.
Students also visited laboratories involved in the ELyT-Lab at Tohoku University: they were allowed to discover the “working life” in a lab, and discuss with professors or other students about their research themes.
One day with visits of industrial partners was organized: a visit of the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant and the JR-East Maintenance Center near Sendai.
Moreover, one afternoon was devoted to cultural aspects of Japan with an introduction (and practice!) of the famous “taiko” drum.
We took advantage as well of the 7th International Conference on Flow Dynamics held in Sendai during this period, to make the students participate and have a 1st experience of an international conference.
All the students were very satisfied with this program and have expressed their wish to continue being involved in future French-Japanese collaborations. As a result, the number of applicants for research internship in Tohoku laboratories has increased. Furthermore, about 20 young INSA students have shown initial interest for the double degree program INSA-Tohoku!
ELyT School can be a very good way to attract students for future co-tutelle thesis and strengthen this special link that has been built between Sendai and Lyon
1 over a total amount of 45 k€. Last, year, the situation was symmetric, as the cost paid by the Japanese side included the flight tickets.
